Analyzing Keyword Position Data: Step-by-Step

Your position in search results directly impacts traffic. Data from Advanced Web Ranking shows position 1 gets 31.7% of clicks, while position 10 receives just 2.5%. Here's how to track and use this information.

Step 1: Export Position Data

In Google Search Console, go to Performance and click Export. Select the last 3 months of data. Sort by Average Position to see where you rank for each search term.

Step 2: Group Keywords by Position Range

Create three categories: positions 1-3, positions 4-10, and positions 11-20. Calculate how many keywords fall into each group. This shows your overall search visibility.

Step 3: Calculate Traffic Potential

For keywords in positions 4-10, note their monthly impressions. Moving from position 7 to position 3 typically triples your traffic for that keyword.

Step 4: Prioritize Improvement Targets

Focus on keywords ranked 4-10 with high impressions. These are closest to page one and represent quick wins. Keywords at position 15-20 require more effort.

Step 5: Monitor Weekly

Check positions every Monday. Look for movements of 3+ positions up or down. Small daily fluctuations between positions 4 and 6 are normal and don't require action.
